Real Sociedad give West Ham hope over future redevelopment of London Stadium

Damien Lucas

"A large section of West Ham United fans are unhappy with how the club's heralded move to the Olympic Stadium has panned out.

The Hammers' move to Stratford from their beloved Upton Park has been beset by problems from the start.

The first season at the London Stadium was marred by in-fighting among the club's fans to segregation issues, violent scenes between home and away supporters, a general dissatisfaction with the distance from the stands to the pitch and concerns over the atmosphere at a ground many refer to as 'soulless'.

Many supporters felt there were broken promises over the move and that has seen a lot of vitriol directed at co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold and their vice-chairman Karren Brady.

Ahead of the move, Hammers fans were promised a genuine retractable seating solution in communications from the club.

In reality they have been left with a temporary lower tier built on a complex scaffolding which will reportedly take weeks to deconstruct and reconstruct each season at a cost of £8 million - some £7.7m more than the original estimate.

The distance from the stands to the pitch is a major bone of contention for many fans with the bowl shape of the venue the biggest problem as the stadium was not built with football in mind.

This season things do seem more settled and the Hammers fans have proved once again how loyal they are to the club by selling out 52,000 season tickets once again.

But having signed a 99-year lease many supporters are disillusioned at the prospect of a long-term future at the ground in it's current state.

Supporters have been led to believe that even if the owners did one day buy the stadium outright - as Dave Sullivan revealed is a serious consideration for his dad David - redeveloping the ground to be closer to the pitch and more suited to football is an impossibility.

However, there could be hope for the Hammers from the unlikely source of Real Sociedad in Spain.

That's because the La Liga club are in the process of undertaking a major reconstruction of their own inherited bowl shaped athletics stadium into a football arena with the stands right next to the pitch.

Estadio Anoeta officially opened on the 29th of July 1993 with the European Youth Athletics Championships. The first match at the stadium was played a few weeks later when Sociedad entertained Real Madrid in a friendly.

But supporters have never been happy there, primarily due to the distance between the spectators and the pitch which has resulted in a cold atmosphere.

In the mid-2000s the club put forward plans to remove the athletics track and redevelop the stadium, a project dubbed Gipuzkoarena, but it failed to get off the ground.

They tried again in early 2014 with proposals for Anoeta, which includes the extension of the lower tier closer to the pitch, increased hospitality areas and an enlarged roof, and an increased capacity to 42,000 seats.

Those plans got the go ahead in 2016 and the works are now underway and are scheduled to finish by the start of the 2019-20 season.

A series of images and videos on stadiumdb.com show just how Sociedad plan to achieve the redevelopment and they will give Hammers fans great hope for the future.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO HOPE IN EVER ACHIEVING ANYTHING WITH OUR TWO BOB WANKER PERVY OLD CUNT OWNERS AND THEIR FUCKING WATFORD FOOTBALL CLUB LEVEL AMBITIONS.

EVEN IF WE PLAYED IN THE BEST FOOTBALL STADIUM IN THE WORLD; IT WOULDN'T MATTER ONE IOTA.

WE WILL NEVER EVER GO ANYWHERE WITH THE TWO CANCERS RUNNING THE CLUB... BUT WE MUST BE GRATEFUL TO FINISH 13TH/14TH OR WHATEVER IN THE LEAGUE...

AFTER ALL, WE'D NEVER REACHED THE DIZZY HEIGHTS OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE BEFORE THEY TOOK OVER AND THEY SAVED US FROM ARMAGEDDON AND CERTAIN DECLINE INTO NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL AND EVENTUAL DISBANDMENT.

I, FOR ONE, AM ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.

As Mike says why waste the money in the 2bobs eyes when we are selling out the cesspit with a 55k waiting list. Where is the incentive when most everyone is happy with it as is?

Reading that it says the whole ground is to be demolished and pitch lowered. The going rate seems to be £500m+ going by what Spurs are paying and what the OS cost to build. Took them 25 yrs. Would only happen if the 2bobs sell which will only happen soon if forced by the fans, who are too busy munching on their Popcorn.

What’s what something another club is doing got to do with us?

Our owners tried to get out of buying a few thousand claret and blue seats for fuck sake, of course they’re not going to buy and then redevelop the shithole.

The multi purpose arena feels temporary as if we were waiting for a proper fit for purpose stadium to be built. But this is what we have been left with. Totally unacceptable.

I don't know. With building costs as they are it would not be too different from knocking the thing down and rebuilding from scratch.

Who is going to do that. Not those currently in charge. It's all too big for them, the whole PL set up.

I don't think anyone expects the Two Bob's to do it, but it shows that it can be done when / IF we ever get decent owners.

Rylan it’s blindingly obvious an owner of a stadium can redevelop how they like.

We don't know what will happen to the stadium in the future do we.
As I said "There MAY be hope"
This shows clearly that it can be done.
That is all.

With the deal the club has why would they do this? Unless no one wants to go?

If we go down they will only need the lower tiers so they can move three sides nearer leaving the owners back out the way.

Brighton Hove Albion have a better ground than West Ham!

It’s time for the owners to move on, they are obviously out of their depth with the club. The league is no place for penny pinchers.

Re: The Stadium - There may be hope afterall........
No matter how the club dress it up the London Stadium maybe bigger than most but I doubt it comes close to being in the top 10 football stadiums in this country.

The best stadiums will have been designed and investment made with the spectator best interests in mind be that the whole design of the stands, hospitality, concourses or little things like padded seats reflecting this.

Whatever the reason the bare minimum has been made at the London Stadium for football fans so the results are purely what should be expected, that is a disappointment and thoughts of what could have been.

What we have is an event stadium, put on an event with all the hype and it does the job, as much as those in charge would like it to be a your average football fixture is not like a concert or an athletics event and ultimately the venue has simply not had the investment to make it suitable to be classed as top venue for football.

The only way the khazi can be turned into a football stadium is for the stands of one end and one side to be demolished and the pitch to be re-positioned and new stands built, all of which would be close to the pitch.
The cost of this would probably be north of £250 MILL so as long as the BERKS are in charge it ain't going to happen.
The real unknown quantity is what it would cost to buy the place, that's if it ever gets put up for sale.
But some of us always warned that this was going to be a catastrophe, but thousands put their blind faith in the lies that the Brady bitch spouted. More fool them, the gullible fools.
